Border Queue Management Service

The border queue management service is an ICT-based tool that lets car and truck drivers reserve time slots for passing through border checkpoints, thereby eliminating the need for physical queues.

Developed by the Estonian company GoSwift as part of a public-private partnership, the service is used at all three checkpoints at Estonia’s border with Russia.

Prior to the system’s introduction in 2011, cars and trucks were processed on a first-come, first-served basis, which forced drivers to queue for hours or sometimes days near the border. The situation was particularly difficult for truck drivers as it made them vulnerable to fatigue and crime.

Moving the queues into the virtual realm has meant that drivers arrive at the checkpoint at their appointed times and are processed quickly, with waiting times now averaging as little as 30 minutes. In addition to drastically improving the lives of drivers, the change has allowed logistics companies to save millions of euros through better planning.

The service was awarded the Transport Achievement Award by OECD’s International Transport Forum in 2015. It has since been implemented in Finland, Lithuania and Russia.

Incident Handling Platform

Guardtime and Estonian Government are building Incident Handling Platform for connected vehicles. Objective of the platform is to enable secure data exchange environment for connected vehicles and smart infrastructure. It ensures a trustworthy audit trail is available to handle incidents – while preserving privacy! It also allows to enforce connected car security – assuring that only authentic and authorized software is used. Guardtime’s Blokchain technology stack is the technical enabler of the platform.

In case of an incident the governmental regulatory authority has immediate and trustworthy access to all relevant data. The solution enables access to audit trail („black box“ contents of a connected vehicle) of all involved connected vehicles and objects. Relevant data includes vehicle identification, speed, location, radar/LIDAR readings, camera images etc. Cross-vendor interoperability and compliance with privacy regulations are built-in by design.

The solution also ensures that vehicles / objects which are compromised (hacked, „tuned” etc.) are timely discovered and prohibited from the ecosystem.  Connected vehicles and objects verify integrity of other vehicles / objects on peer-to-peer basis. Simple tap on the validator provides a ticket and the ticket price is debited directly from person’s bank account. All fare capping rules apply the same as for a normal transit card use. This makes taking public transport and paying for ticket easy and simple.

It is believed and seen on the market, that all future ticketing solutions for cities will follow to adopt contactless bank card payments in public transport validators.

AI-based sales prediction solution for logistics companies


Based on machine learning algorithms Flowit has developed a virtual sales assistant for repetitive sales model companies. We use the existing sales and quota history from customer databases and, based on this, we calculate the future orders, so we can send prefilled orders to submit to customers without any human interaction. We believe that automation is the way of the future for repetitive sales takes, and AI is a major enabler in this.

Before we developed Aitoldyou, sales personnel had to wait for the customer to ask for the proposal for their shipments. Now transport managers can work on optimizing the routes and deal with customer problems rather than with preparing offers. Offers will be sent automatically precisely when the customer needs them.

The SPC monitors the situation on traffic lanes and sidewalks and has implemented several safety and notification functions. The main task of the SPC is to improve the awareness of road users located nearby and to notify road users of the probable traffic hazard. To detect the situations involving traffic hazards, narrow artificial intelligence algorithms are used, which are capable of predicting the moving trajectories of the road users and warn them in advance. In addition, the modular system collects 24/7 traffic and environmental data that can be used to provide an overview of the urban environment and for subsequent city planning.

To attain the objectives of Level 5 autonomous driving, we need to improve the perception of the vehicles beyond what is created by on-vehicle sensors. At Bercman, we achieve this by enabling additional perception for the vehicles through roadside sensors, for example by using our Smart Pedestrian Crosswalk to see behind corners and detect road users well in advance. The SPC supports V2X (infrastructure-to-vehicle) communication enabling automatic communication between all communication-ready traffic entities.

The aim of this process has been to automate the organisation’s day-to-day operations and facilitate the life of car owners.

Since 2016, Finestmedia has been the strategic partner of the Estonian Road Administration in transforming its e-service platform. The aim of this process has been to automate the organisation’s day-to-day operations and facilitate the life of car owners. The platform offers about 60 e-services through Estonian Data Exchange Layer X-Road and has nearly 630 000 users – more than 50% of the total population of Estonia. In 2019, there were nearly 1.5 million logins, over 700 000 background check inquiries, almost 130 000 operations with vehicles and over 65 000 permit/certificate applications processed through the e-service platform.

The e-service platform enables smooth digital processing of several transactions, applications and data inquiries related to the person’s right to drive and their vehicles. A person’s journey to becoming a licenced driver is 100% paperless and only demands two visits to the physical service office – for the two state exams needed to prove one’s qualification. The platform notifies citizens when any document related to their permits is about to expire. Once a driver’s licence expires, it is possible to apply for a new one through the platform and have it sent to one’s home address.

The registration of vehicles is also processed digitally and the owner is automatically notified once a technical inspection is needed to complete the registration. Furthermore, the transferring ownership of vehicles can be conducted without leaving one’s home as well as applying for and receiving a new licence plate, which takes as little as a few days.

TIK road weather information service

TIK road weather information service
TIK is a web-based weather information service that offers you a quick and detailed overview of the current state of the weather and road conditions on all the main roads in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and South of Finland. It also gives you the forecasted road conditions up to 48 hours in advance.

Basic Functionality
TIK uses location-based general weather forecasts from various sources such as road weather station data, rescue service warnings, traffic information from Waze, radar and satellite images, different sensors built into roads and mobile sensors placed on public transport, to create forecasts for road conditions and road weather. All the forecasts are location specific.

The forecasts can be used by drivers to assess the weather or by authorities to provide possible warning messages on the roads, thus improving road safety. The forecasts are also used by road maintenance companies to plan their resources to clear ice and snow in time.

TGS Pavement – Thermographic System for Pavement Quality Monitoring
TGS is currently one of the few solutions in the world that provides real-time pavement quality reporting. TGS monitors 100% of the pavement laid. The reports are instantly uploaded and available both on-site and in the back offices worldwide. You can immediately evaluate and recognize the risks so that actions can be taken instantly.

Basic Functionality
TGS effectively detects one of the most common reasons for pavement failure – high-temperature segregation that causes uneven compaction that makes pavements susceptible to damage from moisture and freeze-thaw cycles.

The system constantly measures the temperature of laid pavement using a thermographic camera and different sensors. It transforms the results into dynamic images and graphs that are easy to follow. The data is saved and uploaded so that it can be monitored on-site or even from across the world both in real-time or historically.

Main target groups:
• Organisations ordering pavement work on roads (as a guarantee that the contractor delivers quality results; plus, as a bonus system to reward contractors for reaching set quality goals).
• Road building companies (can use TGS as a bonus system or real-time paving quality assurance).
• Companies that are interested in collaborating on the further development of TGS Pavement.

Auve Tech Iseauto

The first generation of shuttle buses called Iseauto was developed in cooperation between Auve Tech and Tallinn University of Technology. The project started in 2017 and the first shuttle bus was turned from an idea to reality in just a year.

Iseauto is an autonomous electric shuttle bus that aims to change the future of mobility in various use cases. It is designed for operating at low speeds with a maximum cruising speed of 25 km/h. The shuttle can fit up to 8 passengers or cargo.

Iseauto could be deployed in airports and harbours to ease the commute for staff in large service areas. It could also function as a mode of transport in hospital, university or science park campuses or in suburban areas and gated communities to close the last mile gap in public transportation. Iseauto could also be used as an autonomous transportation for cargo.

The shuttle bus operates on pre-mapped routes and uses LIDARs to observe the surrounding environment and react to obstacles. It also features ultrasonic sensors, cameras and radars. The shuttle can be operated with pre-set stops or as a demand-responsive transportation with the help of a mobile application. Auve Tech is also testing the teleoperation of the shuttles.

Auve Tech is taking part of the Horizon 2020 FABULOS project where it belongs to the Mobile Civitatem Consortium together with Modern Mobility, Tallinn University of Technology and Fleet Complete. The consortium has made it to the third phase which mean that the shuttle bus will be implemented in real-life solutions. The shuttle bus will be tested in Ülemiste City in Tallinn and in Lamia, Greece.

Currently, the shuttle is actively tested in the Zoo of Tallinn, where it will soon start public rides for the visitors. Auve Tech is also developing a self-driving hydrogen-powered shuttle in cooperation with the University of Tartu and a supercapacitor shuttle together with Skeleton Technologies.

BusCloud

BusCloud uses the ridesharing model and caters for public transportation needs in rural areas, where the market does not function or is not sufficiently regulated. BusCloud is a smart public transport platform that integrates different actors in the service cycle, such as residents, drivers and municipalities.

In thinly populated areas, the problem can be that people who do not have a car cannot move any time they want, as public transport goes too seldom. BusCloud enables the local municipality to organise public transportation more efficiently and comfortably in rural areas, especially keeping in mind the more disadvantaged segments like the elderly, the children, the disabled and the unemployed. BusCloud has a social dimension: involvement of the local municipality turns the service into a public bus ride for a regular bus fare, new jobs are created for local drivers, shared rides are more environment friendly, the sometimes idle public vehicles can be taken into good use.

In densely populated, areas challenges can lie with unregistered and unregulated service providers. BusCloud can be used to regulate the semi-illegal bus services that are running anyhow, announce bus schedules to passengers, buy bus tickets with mobile money or other digital solutions. The system has an interface to remit taxes to the local municipality, should the country provide for such a possibility

You are invited to the ITS Estonia collaboration seminar with the delegation of international freight transport network CaaS Nordic. The network promotes Corridor as a Service expertise, data sharing and living lab activities in regional and international cooperation.

The mission of the non-profit association is to promote the emergence of an international logistics hub in the Baltic Sea region for freight transport between the East and the West. The partners of the network include road administrations, cities, entrepreneurship support organisations and private companies.

The main target of the seminar is to create ideas and initiate new cross-border collaboration projects in the Balti Sea region for intelligent freight transportation.

The Smart Pedestrian Crosswalk monitors the situation on traffic lanes and sidewalks and has implemented several safety and notification functions.

Wrong decisions made by road users, attributed to the lack of information about the traffic environment, can be considered to be the primary cause of traffic accidents. We have developed a device to solve this problem.

The Smart Pedestrian Crosswalk monitors the situation on traffic lanes and sidewalks and has implemented several safety and notification functions. The main task of the SPC is to improve the awareness of road users located nearby and to notify road users of the probable traffic hazard. To detect the situations involving traffic hazards, narrow artificial intelligence algorithms are used, which are capable of predicting the moving trajectories of the road users and warn them in advance.

To attain the objectives of Level 5 autonomous driving, we need to improve the perception of the vehicles beyond what is created by on-vehicle sensors. At Bercman, we achieve this by enabling additional perception for the vehicles through road side sensors, for example by using our Smart Pedestrian Crosswalk to see behind corners and detect road users well in advance. The SPC supports V2X (infrastructure-to-vehicle) communication enabling automatic communication between all communication-ready traffic entities.

AI-based sales prediction solution for logistics companies


Based on machine learning algorithms Flowit has developed a virtual sales assistant for repetitive sales model companies. We use the existing sales and quota history from customer databases and, based on this, we calculate the future orders, so we can send prefilled orders to submit to customers without any human interaction. We believe that automation is the way of the future for repetitive sales takes, and AI is a major enabler in this.

BusCloud uses the ridesharing model and caters for public transportation needs in rural areas, where the market does not function or is not sufficiently regulated. BusCloud is a smart public transport platform that integrates different actors in the service cycle, such as residents, drivers and municipalities.

In thinly populated areas, the problem can be that people who do not have a car cannot move any time they want, as public transport goes too seldom. BusCloud enables the local municipality to organise public transportation more efficiently and comfortably in rural areas, especially keeping in mind the more disadvantaged segments like the elderly, the children, the disabled and the unemployed. BusCloud has a social dimension: involvement of the local municipality turns the service into a public bus ride for a regular bus fare, new jobs are created for local drivers, shared rides are more environment friendly, the sometimes idle public vehicles can be taken into good use.

In densely populated, areas challenges can lie with unregistered and unregulated service providers. BusCloud can be used to regulate the semi-illegal bus services that are running anyhow, announce bus schedules to passengers, buy bus tickets with mobile money or other digital solutions. The system has an interface to remit taxes to the local municipality, should the country provide for such a possibility

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), Tallinn University of Technology and the Estonian Roads Administration have the pleasure of inviting you to the European PRAISE seminar on preventing road risk for employees.

The PRAISE project “Preventing Road Accidents and Injuries for the Safety of Employees” addresses road safety risks in the work context. The project was co-funded by the European Commission, and is now supported by the Fundación MAPFRE, the German Road Safety Council (DVR), and the Dräger Foundation.

PRAISE aims to promote best practices and spur on employers to secure high road safety standards for their employees. In the framework of this campaign, ETSC is organising an international seminar in Tallinn bringing together the Union of haulers, Police, fleet safety managers, government representatives, social affairs representatives and road safety experts from Europe.

On the agenda will be measures to improve work related road safety in Estonia and in other EU Member States. The program will also include contributions from leading occupational health and safety experts in Estonia but also presentations of ETSC’s Thematic Reports. Interpretation Estonia/English will be provided to participants.

ABOUT FAST INNOVATION TRIALS IN FINEST SMART MOBILITY PROJECT

Positium will develop a service prototype which purpose is to better understand cross-border movements in twin-cities using mobile phone location data. Movements of people travelling between Helsinki and Tallinn and their journeys in destinations are analyzed and visualized. Ferry companies are able to identify passenger flows between harbours, but have little information about further movement after leaving the ferry. This service prototype will add a new dimension: Positium will analyze the mobility flows that pass through ports and map the movements in both urban areas after arriving to port (Estonians in Helsinki region and Finns in Tallinn regions). As a result, we will be able to map popular tourist stops, as well as the most common routes taken at the destination. Knowing tourists’ activity spaces, better urban planning can be undertaken, creating a pleasant environment for both the tourists and the locals. (Positium LBS Oü)

EyeVi Panorama View

Border Queue Management Service

The border queue management service is an ICT-based tool that lets car and truck drivers reserve time slots for passing through border checkpoints, thereby eliminating the need for physical queues.

Developed by the Estonian company GoSwift as part of a public-private partnership, the service is used at all three checkpoints at Estonia’s border with Russia.

Prior to the system’s introduction in 2011, cars and trucks were processed on a first-come, first-served basis, which forced drivers to queue for hours or sometimes days near the border. The situation was particularly difficult for truck drivers as it made them vulnerable to fatigue and crime.

Moving the queues into the virtual realm has meant that drivers arrive at the checkpoint at their appointed times and are processed quickly, with waiting times now averaging as little as 30 minutes. In addition to drastically improving the lives of drivers, the change has allowed logistics companies to save millions of euros through better planning.

The service was awarded the Transport Achievement Award by OECD’s International Transport Forum in 2015. It has since been implemented in Finland, Lithuania and Russia.
